About Hobnail Crochet

In the 1930s the Fenton Art Glass Company created a unique glass pattern of raised knobs that reminded them of many of the studs that were used on the soles of hobnail boots. Appropriately, they named the new design hobnail glass and started selling handmade glass in the United States.

Years later, a popular craft patterned itself on the glass that had patterned itself on a boot. The craft was crocheting, of all things, and the Hobnail crochet is a technique that is used primarily by people who are more experienced at crochet.

You might be wondering why it’s called hobnail. Well, believe it or not, the technique actually creates a bobbled pattern in yarn that is said to resemble hobnail glass. It is, however, a fairly complicated technique that takes quite a bit of patience and practice to master.

Where to start? If you know how to use single and triple crochet stitches in combinations, it may be possible for you to attempt hobnail crochet. Of course, the probability of creating an impressive hobnail design your first time around is likely only a wee bit better than your chances of winning the lottery. But it will undoubtedly be an interesting experience.

To learn about hobnail design, you need only look online. Really, it is far too complicated a technique for us to explain in this brief article. That is why we will conclude by telling you what hobnail crochet can be used for. Most often, it is used to create interesting and elaborate patterns on blankets, sweaters, and scarves. While it is possible to use just about any yarn, tough and sturdy yarn like wool or cotton is best because it stands out more.
