Hand Tools for Hobbyists

Some of the most rewarding and challenging hobbies focus on the production of handicrafts. A handicraft is nothing more than a useful or decorative item that is created either by hand or with simple, traditional tools. Some popular examples of handicrafts include wooden or ceramic cups or bowls, leather belts, and metal boxes.

The most popular hobbies for producing handicrafts are leather, metal and woodworking. Although there are literally hundreds of hobbies and activities that can be used to create handicrafts, these three require a higher level of skill than all of the others when it comes to the use of simple hand tools .

Some of the most common hand tools include, smoothing planes for woodworking, soldering irons for metalworking, and awls and spare points for leatherworking. (more...)

About Hobnail Crochet

In the 1930s the Fenton Art Glass Company created a unique glass pattern of raised knobs that reminded them of many of the studs that were used on the soles of hobnail boots. Appropriately, they named the new design hobnail glass and started selling handmade glass in the United States.

Years later, a popular craft patterned itself on the glass that had patterned itself on a boot. The craft was crocheting, of all things, and the Hobnail crochet is a technique that is used primarily by people who are more experienced at crochet.

You might be wondering why it’s called hobnail. Well, believe it or not, the technique actually creates a bobbled pattern in yarn that is said to resemble hobnail glass. It is, however, a fairly complicated technique that takes quite a bit of patience and practice to master. (more...)

Musical Instrument Ornaments Gifts

A great craft project for young and old, is to make either wooden crafts or from other materials to celebrate the Arts. One of the most popular craft kits this year has been how to make your own musical instrument as an ornament, and hang it on the Christmas tree. Whatever musical instruments you play, you can choose from a violin ornament, cello ornament, etc. in the strings family. Or, you can choose from the horns section: trumpet, trombone, tuba, etc.

Each of these musical instrument ornaments can be purchased from www.RussellRhodes.com as a kit or pre-assembled if you're not interested in doing a craft project this Christmas. Of special note, there are also blown glass ornaments than can be personalized with a gold paint pen available from most hobby stores.

For additional fun, consider creating your own craft kits and giving them as gifts this season. Kids love activities, and Mom and Dad are frequently looking for creative fun the whole family can enjoy. Crafting is a great way to bring the family together. And, just like musical instrument ornaments that can be created as a crafting activity, it's something everyone will remember as part of the family holiday. (more...)

French Gifts and Other Crafts from France

Beads are highly versatile and much can be done with them. If you love beads, then you will understand why I am intrigued by the different crafts that incorporate beads and beading.

Something I learnt recently and am fascinated by is the art of beading. Beaded flowers are particularly beautiful. This discovery came to me all the way from France gifts and as presents are so hard to find, and I was looking to add craft accessories on my home-made gifts, I came across French beaded flowers in a book and was immediately enamoured by them. Apparently, although beaded flowers are not exclusive to France, French techniques are slightly different from Victorian Beaded flowers. This technique probably evolved in Italy as well as France and was very much in vogue during the nineteenth century.

Needless to say, these little gems can make lovely vintage accessories. They can make gorgeous gifts on their own and also go on to some item of clothing. A growing number of beaded crafts are infact, being seen in fashion, home decor, making an appearance especially at weddings. (more...)

Oak Furniture for the Home

There’s a reason people still use expressions like "strong as an oak tree" to describe a power animal or individual. In fact, oaks have long been associated with royalty as they were seen as steadfast, noble and enduring.

That is one reason why oak has long been the wood of choice for carpenters and furniture makers around the world. Not only is oak one of the strongest and most durable woods, it is also one of the most beautiful.

When it comes to purchasing quality oak furniture , pieces that were handmade by a professional craftsman are always highly sought after. Though they will undoubtedly be more expensive, furniture that was cut, shaped and assembled by a professional will last for many years.
