A great craft project for young and old, is to make either wooden crafts or from other materials to celebrate the Arts. Beads are highly versatile and much can be done with them. If you love beads, then you will understand why I am intrigued by the different crafts that incorporate beads and beading.

Something I learnt recently and am fascinated by is the art of beading. Beaded flowers are particularly beautiful. This discovery came to me all the way from France gifts and as presents are so hard to find, and I was looking to add craft accessories on my home-made gifts, I came across French beaded flowers in a book and was immediately enamoured by them. Apparently, although beaded flowers are not exclusive to France, French techniques are slightly different from Victorian Beaded flowers. This technique probably evolved in Italy as well as France and was very much in vogue during the nineteenth century.

Needless to say, these little gems can make lovely vintage accessories. They can make gorgeous gifts on their own and also go on to some item of clothing. A growing number of beaded crafts are infact, being seen in fashion, home decor, making an appearance especially at weddings. (more...)

When we talk about arts and crafts we often recall primary school where when we made log cabins out of lollypop sticks. But the word craft can actually be traced all the way back to the European Middle Ages. Later, in post industrial societies, arts and crafts experienced a Renaissance of sorts when social thinkers like John Ruskin extolled the virtues of creative activities as simple hobbies.

Before that time, of course, crafts were professions rather than vocations. In fact, most of these basic activities were part of the guild system. This was a system where young people served as apprentices under master-craftsmen while they perfected the skills they would need to ply their future trade.

After the training, a new master-craftsman could set up shop for himself and begin charging members of his community for his products or services. The process continued for generations before the Industrial revolution abruptly eliminated the need for many trained craftsmen. That is why most crafts are commonly considered a hobby these days. With Christmas drawing nearer, now is the time to go up into the attic and check out the state of your Christmas decorations after having packed them away last year. It's better to check them earlier than the day before you want to put them up!

Not only do you need to check to make sure that the damp has not affected your decorations and tree in any way, but also, it might be worth plugging your lights in the wall to see if they are still working OK. If they are not, at least it gives you plenty of time to buy some more led Christmas lights. If they are not working, or you think they perhaps do not look as good as they did last year, then a visit to a craft shop or other similar outlet should provide you with new decorations and lights.
